Summary

I. Preparations & The Burnt Hand

This episode starts with a woman getting ready for a book club in her house. She burns her hand while removing a tray of muffins from the oven. The doorbell rings; one of her guests, an elderly lady arrives. She observes that her plumbing is not yet finished being fixed as we see the legs of a man working on pipes at the side of the house. The man replies that it is a work in progress.

II. The Rumble & The Mission

We see the woman and her book club sitting down, discussing the book. A man is saying that he did not enjoy the book, and that “Ben” would not like it. The woman says that the book is her favorite, and sarcastically remarks that she meant to pick the book that Ben would dislike the most. Just then a tremor shakes the room. Plates fall and break. All of the book club members stand up and run to the door and out onto the lawn. Outside we see other small houses and other people running out of their homes. The rumbling stops, and we focus on the woman, watching as a man comes out of his home across the square, a familiar face indeed: Henry Gale. Henry walks up to the woman just as a strange noise fills the air. They all look up and see a large jet flying at a low altitude overhead. As they look, it splits into three pieces: the tail falls, and the fuselage and cockpit fly ahead for a while before descending out of sight. Henry calls a familiar man, Goodwin, over to him, and tells him to run to where the tail landed (apparently, he would reach it in an hour if he ran). Goodwin replies that the plane is probably in the water. Henry calls another familiar man, Ethan, over. He tells Ethan to go the fuselage. Then he tells both Ethan and Goodwin that they are to “become” survivors of the plane, not to get involved, but to observe. If questioned, they should make up believable stories. He wants “lists” in three days. They dash off. Henry looks at the woman and says, “So I guess I’m out of the book club.” Dramatic music plays, and we see the houses in the square (I’d venture a guess at 20 houses total). The camera backs out until all that we see of the village is a small clearing in a large valley between two mountains, with three pillars of smoke rising in the distance: one at the edge of a large bay, one in the middle of the jungle, and another beyond the horizon.

LOST.

Flashback I

We see Jack in flashback, sitting in his car by the school that Sarah works at. He is eyeing a man, presumably another teacher, who Sarah is talking and laughing with.

III. Welcome to the Cell

Scene changes to Jack on the island. He is laying on a metal table in a dark room with a steady drip of water in the background. The construction, at first glance, screams Dharma. He notices a cotton ball taped to his arm, and peels it off. Apparently he was given a shot of some kind. He tries the door. Locked. He turns around, sees a door open, and walks straight into a glass wall. After several vain attempts at breaking down the glass, he screams at the door, yelling for his friends.

IV. The Shower

Scene changes to a shower room. Kate is laying on the ground. She wakes up and sees Tom (Mr. Friendly, Bearded Man, Zeke) standing on the opposite side of the room. After engaging in small talk, and denying her the knowledge of where she or her friends are, he tells her to take a shower. She objects, but then he says that he won’t be there, as she isn’t his type. He walks off. Kate notices a cotton ball taped to her arm. She pulls it off.

V. The Cage & The Food Button

Scene changes to Sawyer lying outside, in a cage. There is a large building behind the cage. Another cage is not far away, with another person it it. The man igores his attempts to talk. Sawyer looks around and sees a large metal button with a knife and a fork painted on it, as well as two levers, one on the ground and one in the up on the ceiling, on opposite sides of the cage. He presses the “utensil button”. A voice says “Warning.” He pushes it again. The voice says “Warning.” He is about to push it again, when the man in the other cage says, “I wouldn’t do that”. Sawyer blows him off and pushes it, and promptly gets blown across the cage into a wall by some invisible force. After saying his catch phrase “Son of a …” the man says “Told ya.”

VI. Juliet

Scene change to Jack, still in his prison. He is staring at a security camera in the room beyond the glass wall. He tries to pull down a chain hanging from the ceiling, when a voice asks him to stop. He looks, and in the doorway beyond the glass is the book club woman, who introduces herself as Juliet.

Flashback II

In flashback, Jack walks into a large waiting room, where Sarah is sitting. She asks him about his lawyer. Jack tells her that he fired his lawyer and tries to apologize for what he has done to cause the rift in their marriage, but Sarah has a cell phone call, presumably with her boyfriend. Jack wants to know who the man is at all costs, but Sarah walks away.

VII. Tell Me Where My Friends Are

Back on the island, Jack is still fighting the chain. Juliet asks him to stop. Jack screams, “Tell me where my friends are!” She says that she will if Jack stops with the chain. He doesn’t… yet.

VIII. Breakfast on the Beach

Scene change to Kate taking her shower. She walks out with a towel, and goes to a locker where she had stowed her clothes. To her surprise she finds that they are gone. She yells, asking where her clothes are, when she sees a locker taped with a sign saying “Wear this”. She opens up the locker to find a dress. She puts in on. When she is done, Tom walks in and says, “He is waiting.” He takes her outside, and they walk through the jungle until they reach the beach, where Henry Gale is sitting under a large tent-like structure with a full meal set out before him on a table. Kate sits down, and is puts on handcuffs, per request from Henry Gale. He says that they burned her normal clothes. She asks why she was wearing the dress and why she was being served breakfast. Henry Gale says an unforgettable quote: “I brought you here so that you could look out at the water and feel comforted. Comforted that your friends are looking out at the same ocean. I gave you the dress so that you’d feel like a lady, and I wanted you to eat your food with a real, live fork, and feel civilized. I did all those things so that you’d have something nice to hold on to, because, Kate, the next two weeks are going to be very unpleasant.” Creepy music, and then black.

Flashback III

Jack is sitting in his office at work (in flashback, by the way) calling numbers on Sarah’s cell phone, trying to sound like he doesn’t know who she is, when Christian, his father, walks in. He observes what he is doing and inquires why. Jack says that he has to know who Sarah’s boyfriend is. Christian gets a call on his cell phone. It’s Sarah. Obviously this makes Jack perturbed. Jack calls him a drunk and kicks him out of his office.

IX. What is Going on Here?

Jack is in his cell again, on the island. He tries to drink a drip from the ceiling, but spits it out. He hears a static noise coming from the intercom on the wall, and he is surprised to hear his dad’s voice coming through, saying “Let it go, Jack.” Juliet comes into the room beyond the glass with a tray of food. She tells Jack to sit with his back against the wall in the back corner of his cell so that she can open the door and set the food inside. Jack says that he doesn’t want food. He wants Juliet to tell whoever was talking through the intercom to stop. Juliet says that he is hallucinating; the intercom hasn’t worked for years. Jack points out a red button on the wall behind Juliet and asks what it is. Juliet says it is for emergencies. Jack asks who is watching him on the camera. Juliet doesn’t answer. She asks him to sit against the wall to get food. Jack says no; he doesn’t trust her. Juliet asks Jack what his job was, and he answers that he was a Repo man (a lie, obviously). She asks if he was married, and Jack lies and says no. When Jack asks about Juliet, she changes the subject by asking where their plane came from. Jack gets serious and says Sydney. Juliet asks him what he was doing there. He says that he was bring his dad home … because he was dead. Juliet says that she is “sorry” (is she?). She says that Jack can trust her. Jack starts to cry and asks her what is going to happen to him. She doesn’t answer; she walks out the room.

X. Escape?

Sawyer is trying out the levers in his cage. The man in the other cage asks him about his camp: how far away it is, how the people are, etc. Sawyer doesn’t directly answer. As the man was talking, he was also picking the lock to his cage. He opens the door and runs to Sawyer’s cage. He opens Sawyer’s door and they run in opposite directions into the jungle. Sawyer runs into Juliet, who stuns him with a type of dart pistol that immobilizes him enough for Tom and her to drag him back to his cage. Tom takes the man who was in the other cage, and, calling him Karl, tells him to tell Sawyer he was sorry for “involving him in his breakout attempt.” Karl does so.

XI. Eat the Food

Jack is sitting on the metal table. Juliet comes into the room beyond the glass (I’m going to call that room the observation room now) with a plate of food. She tells him about the side effects of the drugs they gave him in the arm when they captured him. She says that he will dehydrate, and that hallucinations are possible. She wants him to eat and drink. Juliet tells him that if he agrees, he isn’t “losing the fight”. Jack goes to the back of the cell to wait for his food.

Flashback IV

In flashback, Jack is talking to a nurse when he sees his father receiving a cell phone call, presumably from Sarah. Christian laughs and smiles while talking. Jack is very curious about this. He follows him, later that night, to a hotel. He enters a room that his dad went in to, only to find that it is a conference room filled with people. Jack demands that his dad give him the cell phone. The room is an alcohol support group of sorts. A woman stands up and tells Jack that his dad has told them so much about him. Jack instantly gets mad, pointing out all the negative things that he thought his dad would say. The woman informs Jack that his dad has been sober for fifty days. Jack looks surprised for a moment, but then he suggests that it was Sarah who helped him turn the corner. Christian is appalled, and basically tells Jack to stop while he’s ahead. Jack responds by pushing him over.

XII. Water?

Back on the island, Juliet opens the door to Jack’s cell. Jack stands up and rushes at the door and grabs her. He grabs the stun dart gun in her belt and tosses it away. Juliet drops the plate of food, which breaks. Jack grabs a shard of the plate and holds it to her neck. He steps out of the room, only to see Henry Gale at the end of the hall. Jack tells Juliet to open the hatch-like door in front of them, but Juliet replies that if she does, they will die. Henry Gale tells Jack that she is telling the truth. Jack pushes Juliet away and begins opening the door. Henry Gale runs out the back door and slams it, not allowing Juliet time to get out. Jack finishes opening the door. Water pours in at a rapid rate. With the help of Juliet, Jack pushes the door closed, stopping the water. Juliet has Jack push the emergency button, and then she punches him, knocking him out.

XIII. The Fish Biscuit

Sawyer has his arms outside his cage, reaching towards a black rock. He manages to grab the rock and pull it between the bars into his cage. He presses down the ground lever and sets the rock on it. He walks over the food button, takes his shoe off, presses the food button, then throws his shoe at the lever on the ceiling. He begins dancing around, almost like he’s psychotic. A biscuit shaped like a fish with the word DHARMA printed on the side falls out of a hole by the food button. As Sawyer is looking at it, a fair amount of corn (maybe grain?) falls out of the hole, too. Sawyer looks at it, obviously displeased. Then a pipe by the food button starts filling up a trough with water, and Sawyer begins to drink the water when Tom walks into the clearing with Kate behind her, still in the dress. Tom puts Kate in the other cage, as they had taken Karl away. Tom notices Sawyer’s fish biscuit, and jokingly says, “Well, I see you got yourself a fish biscuit!” Sawyer proudly responds that he figured out their contraption. Tom looks at Sawyer, smiles, and said that it only took the bears two hours to figure out, and walks away. Sawyer yells after him, “How many were there?” Sawyer says hello to Kate, and then sees that she is in a bad mood, so he cracks a couple jokes to cheer her up. He compliments her dress. Kate replies that they made her wear it. Sawyer asks Kate if she wants food, and he tosses her the fish biscuit, which she starts to eat. Sawyer smiles.

XIV. The Hydra & Jack’s Life

Jack wakes up on the metal table, with Juliet in the Observation Room reading a large stack of paper. Jack observes that the building must be an aquarium, used for sharks. Juliet smiles, and says, “Dolphins, too.” He asks if it is a DHARMA station, and she says yes, and it is called “The Hydra”. Jack asks if the Others are what was left of DHARMA, and she says, “That was a long time ago. It doesn’t matter what we are, only what we are.” Juliet suddenly changes the subject and tells Jack that they know all about him. Jack disagrees, but Juliet spews out a large amount of info about Jack’s life, including Sarah and his dad. She even had copy of his dad’s autopsy report. Jack starts to break down. Juliet holds up the stack of papers and says, “This is your life.” Jack asks, with tears, if it is only his life, or the life of his friends and family. She says that it is about pretty much everything. “Sarah?” Jack asks. “Yes,” Juliet answers. “What do you want to know?”

Flashback V

In flashback, Jack is in a prison cell (presumably for the assault of his father). An officer comes and tells him that his bail was posted. He walks out to see Sarah, who tells him that his dad called her. She leaves him a cab and walks away, crying as she goes. Jack tries to talk to her, when he sees a man across the road. Jack asks if that is him. She replies, “It doesn’t matter who he is… It matters who you aren’t.” She says that his dad called her to help Jack, but we was so drunk that she couldn’t understand him. She says, “Think of the bright side… Now you have something to fix.” She leaves, with her boyfriend’s arm around her shoulder. Jack starts to cry heavily.

XV. Is Sarah Happy?

On the island, Jack is still crying. He asks if Sarah is happy, and Juliet says, “Yes, she’s very happy.” This is too much for Jack, and he cries even more heavily than he was. Juliet asks him if she can trust him enough to bring him food. Jack nods while tears fall down his face.

XVI. Ben

Juliet leaves the room. She sees Henry Gale in the hallway. He says, “Good job, Juliet.” She replies, “Thank you… Ben.”

3.02: The Glass Ballerina

Go to Summary

Key Points & Observations

  • Sun did have an affair with Jae, although we still don’t know whose child she his carrying.
  • The Others have contact with the outside world.
  • Romantic feelings do exist between Sawyer and Kate.
  • Pickett’s first name is Danny.
  • The Others now have Desmond’s boat.

Summary

Flashback I

The opening shot is a glass ballerina spinning around. Suddeny, it falls and shatters. Sun, as a child, runs away to another room and plays the piano. Her father, Mr. Paik, walks in. He asks her if she broke it. She lies, and says the maid did. Mr. Paik says that if it is true, he’ll have to fire the maid. Sun doesn’t care; she says it was the maid.

I. Modifying the Plan

Sun is in the bathroom on the boat, splashing water on her face. Jin comes in. Sun says she has morning sickness, and they head up onto the deck. Sayid is up there with Rosseau’s map. A fire is burning on the beach. The boat is anchored about a hundred yards off-shore. Jin wants to leave, and with Sun translating, tells Sayid. Sayid says that Jack will not be able to see the smke because of the mountains. Sayid wants to sail ahead. Jin is strongly opposed, but gives in when Sun agrees with Sayid.

II. Ben Wants That Boat

Jack is sitting, dejected in the corner of his cell. Juliet comes in and gives him food. She makes small talk by saying she made the soup; Jack doesn’t respond. Juliet walks out and down the hall, where she enters a room where Ben is standing next to multiple TV screens (reminiscient of the Pearl). He says the thought-provoking line, “You never made soup for me.”
An Other named Colleen comes in. She says that the Others have a situation. “The Iraqi” found the decoy village. Ben said that was what they wanted. She said that an Other followed Sayid back to the beach, where they saw the sailboat. Ben is obviously surprised. Juliet doesn’t seem that upset, sailing in circles will keep them busy. Colleen says that with the boat, Sayid could find them. Ben thinks for a moment (He obviously is in charge). Ben asks how fast Colleen can get a team together. Within the hour, she says. Good, Ben says, because he wants that boat.

LOST.

III. Where Are We Going?

Sawyer, in his cage, works the levers to get food and water. Kate wakes up, surprised. She comments about his “nice alarm clock”. Tom comes around the corner with several other Others, equipped with guns. Pickett, from last season, is among them. He lets them out, and takes them out along the path. By the entrance to the Hydra, Colleen comes around the corner and yells “Danny, wait!” Apparently, Pickett’s first name is Danny. Colleen and Danny share a moment while talking about where she’s going. They’re obviously a couple. Pickett/Danny rejoins the group, and they walk on.

IV. Jin Is In Charge

Sun, Jin, and Sayid are sitting on the deck of the boat. Sayid is loading a rifle. Sun and Jin share a moment about why Sun came: to be near Jin. Jin tells her that she should have never questioned him earlier on the issue of going back.

Flashback II

Sun is laying in bed. Suddenly, Jae’s head pops up from behind her. They are in bed together. Sun rolls over and says that it isn’t right because she’s married. Jae doesn’t care at all. Jae gives Sun a necklace. Sun appreciates it, but says that she can’t wear it because Jin would ask about it. Jae says that Jin is no longer an issue; her English is good enough that Sun and himself can leave South Korea and go to America. Suddenly there is a knock at the door. Jae is surprised. He gets up and answers it, surprised to see Sun’s father, Mr. Paik. He is stunned to see Sun. He tells her to leave. Now.

V. Mining

Sawyer, Kate, and the Other escorts walk into a clearing where a bunch of people are mining rocks and tilling the ground, among other things. Piickett walks up and tells Kate that she will be chopping rocks with a pick axe, while Sawyer will collect them and haul them out. Kate asks if she has to do work with the dress. Pickett says of course not, she can take it off if she wants to. Sawyer finds this funny, but Kate doesn’t. Pickett says that if they stop working, or run off, they will be shocked (it sounded very much like he said “shot”). Sawyer says, “Shot?” Pickett clarifies about the shock. Kate says she isn’t doing anything until she sees Jack. Pickett looks like he is about to shock Kate, but then he shocks Saywer, who falls down. It was 1/4 of a charge.

Flashback III

Jin is in Mr. Paik’s office. Mr. Paik says that there is a problem; apparently a man is “stealing” from him. He must be taught a lesson. Mr. Paik hands Jin a portfolio, which Jin opens. Inside is a picture of Jae. Jin, unsuspecting, says that he will send him a message. Mr. Paik vehemently responds that a message won’t suffice. Basically, he must die. Jin says that he can’t do that; it isn’t part of his job. “Your job is what I say it is!” Mr. Paik yells. Jin responds cooly that he is quitting. Mr. Paik says that he can’t quit. He goes on to explain that Jae has shamed him and his family, which now includes Jin.
Jin understands, and leaves the room.

VI. The Pala Ferry

Jin is in the galley of the ship, butchering a fish, when Sun calls him up to the deck. He runs up. Sun and Sayid are looking at the Pala Ferry (where the Others brought Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, and Michael). Sayid says that the dock has been abandoned for some time, as it is decaying. He wants to tie the boat to the ferry dock and start a fire on the beach. Jin asks if it is safe. “Yes, Jin, of course it’s safe,” he resonds.

VII. Alex

Sawyer and Kate are working in the mining area. Sawyer pauses and begins to check Kate out. Pickett yells at him, telling him to get back to work. Sawyer, who has given Pickett/Danny (I’ll call him Picky) the nickname “Boss”, complies. Suddenly, a small pebble bounces off a rock by Kate. Kate looks around, and hears a voice whispering, trying to get her attention. It’s Alex, the rogue (?) Other. While hiding behind foliage, she asks if Kate and Sawyer are being held in the cages. Kate nods. She asks if she saw a man in there named Karl. Kate says no (remember, Sawyer saw him, but not Kate). Alex mutters that they (or is she talking about Karl?) are not even supposed to be in those cages. She asks where Kate got the dress, and when Kate says that the Others gave it to her, Alex says it is hers. “You can keep it. It looks better on you, anyway.” Alex leaves.
Sawyer walks past Kate and asks her if she’s having fun. Kate tells him to stop staring at her. Sawyer jokingly says that there is nothing else to look at. Picky tells them to shut up.

VIII. Sayid is Lying

Sayid is pouring cans of gas on a rather large pile of sticks. Sun walks up and asks him if there is anything she can do. Sayid tells her to help Jin; they need a lot of wood to make sure that Jack can see them. Sun surprises him by asking why he is lying. Sayid counters, but after seeing that Sun has found him out, says that he “fairly certain” that Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, and Michael have been captured, as there are fresh tracks all over the dock. Sun realizes that the fire is not meant to attract Jack, but to attract the Others. Sayid confirms that, saying that he will capture two, and kill the rest. One to make the second cooperate when he tries to get information out of them. Sayid asks Sun not to tell Jin until the fire is lit, because then it will be too late to turn around.

Flashback IV

Jin comes home. It’s dinner time, and Sun is setting the time. They engage in small talk, asking each other about their days. Jin says that he saw Sun’s father, and that he called him son for the first time, because he wants Jin to deliver a message. Sun asks if he is going to do it, and Jin says that he has to. Sun counters, saying that he doesn’t have to. Jin looks at her and says that it isn’t that simple. Sun tells Jin that they could escape and go to America, where her father could never find them. Jin: “I do this for you! This is what it takes to be married to you.” Sun turns it around on Jin: “And what does it take to be married to you?” Jin turns around and leaves to deliver the message.

IX. Jin Knows His Guns & His English

Sayid, Sun, and Jin are still making the fire. Jin suddenly walks to Sayid and says “Gun”. Sayid says that he doesn’t understand. Sun translates: Jin knows about the lie. He knows English better than they think he does. Jin knows that Sun has “betrayed him”. Sayid hands him the gun, so that Jin can be in on it, too, and is about to explain how the gun when Jin pulls the clip out, checks it, puts it back in, turns the safety on, and cocks it in rapid succession. Sayid’s face says what he’s obviously thinking: “Okay, I guess Jin knows how to use a gun…”
Sayid turns to Sun and says that she should stay on the boat. In case the Others get past Sayid and Jin, there is an extra gun under the tarp in the galley. She should use it, and get away.

X. The Convenient Kiss

Juliet comes into the mining area. She casually talks to the Others in control there, then walks over to Sawyer and gives him a canteen. Sawyer looks like he is going to drink it, but then he dumps out all the water with a sly smile on his face. Sawyer walks away and begins to work, when he sees Kate swinging her pickaxe, obviously tired. He gets a determined look on his face and walks to Kate, and pulls her up and kisses her. Picky notices and tackles Sawyer, who then stands up and proceeds to beat up a couple of the Others, and grab a rifle, when Juliet tells him to stop. Juliet has a gun pointed at Kate. Sawyer drops the gun. Picky shocks Sawyer. He falls over.

XI. Those Sneaky Others

Night time. Sayid and Jin are hiding behind trees by the fire, waiting for the Others.
Sun is in the galley, lighting the oven.
Feat step over the side of the boat’s deck railing.
Sun hears the noise, and grabs the under the tarp.

Flashback V

Jin is in his car, watching Jae talk to another man out on the street. Jae leaves, and Jin follows him to his apartment door, where he attacks him. Jin beats up on Jae a bit, and then sticks a gun in his face on Jae’s couch. Jae obviously thinks that Jin found out about the affair, but doesn’t say so directly. Jin is about to kill Jae when he pulls the gun away, overcome by his inability to take a life. He tells Jae to leave the country and never come back. If he does, he will kill him. Jin leaves.
Jin sits down in his car and closes his eyes. A fluttering noise, and then a body crashes through the windshield of his car. Jin jumps out of the car, only to see Jae’s body. In Jae’s hand is the necklace he was going to give to Sun.

XII. Goodbye, Boat

Sayid and Jin are in the jungle. They don’t think the Others are coming.
The Others enter the boat. Colleen descends into the galley, where she is confronted by Sun, who points a gun at her. Colleen, who knows Sun’s full name, doesn’t think that she will kill her. She moves closer, and Sun warns her not to come any closer. Colleen says that the Others aren’t the enemy, but if Sun kills her, they will become the enemy. Colleen takes one more step, and Sun shoots her in the gut. Colleen falls over. An Other notices the sound and sees Sun. Sun runs to another ladder and climbs up to the deck. The Others begin to shoot at Sun.
Jin and Sayid hear gun shots and run towards the boat, where they are met by gunfire. Taking refuge behind the Pala Ferry sign, they return fire at the now-moving boat.
Tom, one of the Others on the boat, sees Sun and shoots at her. Sun jumps off the side of the boat.
Jin jumps off the ferry dock, chasing the boat, which he thinks Sun is still on. The boat rockets away. Jin calls for Sun, and Sun answers. They share a moment in the water.

Flashback VI

Sun is at Jae’s outdoor funeral. Her father, whom she didn’t know was there, walks up and tells her that she shouldn’t be there. He had done business with Jae’s father, it turns out. Sun asks him if he will tell Jin. He responds that it is not his place to tell. He turns and leaves.

XIII. Sayid is Sorry

Jin and Sun are sitting on the beach. They have a tender moment in which Jin tells Sun that he couldn’t leave Sun or their baby. Sayid walks up and tells them that he is sorry, and that he will listen to Jin next time. He says that they should start heading back to the beach camp, as it is a long walk back.

XIV. What They Learned

Sawyer and Kate are back in their cages. Sawyer is coughing. Kate asks him if he is alright, and he says that he’s never been better. Kate asks him what he was thinking when he kissed her. Sawyer says that she was too cute with the pickaxe to resist. Sawyer leans into the bars and whispers his scouting report on several of the Others & the way they fight. Then he says that they probably couldn’t have had the guts to kill them, except for “the blonde one” (Juliet), who would have killed Kate in a heartbeat. Kate asks Sawyer why “she” (Juliet) called him James. Sawyer tells her that it is his real name (remember, Kate knew that Sawyer wasn’t his real name, but never knew what his real name was). Sawyer says he learned one more thing: Kate’s mouth tastes like strawberries. Kate says that Sawyer’s mouth tastes like fish biscuit. Kate asks Sawyer what they should do now…

XV. Eavesdropping

Ben is sitting in a room with many TV monitors, each with footage of a different security camera. One is on Sawyer and Kate. We hear Sawyer responding to Kate’s question: “Sooner or later, they’re going to let their guard down. And when they do, we’re going to put them in their place.” That seemed to amuse Ben.

XVI. The Red Sox Won

Jack is sitting in the corner of his cell. Ben enters the cell and stands in front of Jack. He unfolds a chair and sits down. He observes that just a week ago, they were in the opposite situation: Ben in a cell and Jack staring down at him. Now it is a bit different. Jack asks him what he wants, and Ben says he wants Jack to change his perspective. The first step is a formal introduction. Ben extends his hand and says, “Hello, my name is Benjamin Linus, and I’ve lived on this island all my life.” Jack looks at him weird, not buying it. Ben looks at the door, and says, “Bring it in”. An Other brings in a cart with a TV on it. “Where are Kate and Sawyer?” Jack asks. Ben says that they are near, and they are fine. That’s all he can say. Jack corrects him: that’s all he wants to say. Ben agrees.
Ben tells Jack that if he cooperates, he can go home, off the island. “Cooperate with who?” Jack asks. When the time is right, Ben says, Jack will know. “Is home where you sent Michael and Walt?” Jack asks. “If you could leave, why are you still here?” “Yes, Jack, why am I still here?” Jack thinks it is all a lie, and that the Others are stuck on the island, too. Henry interrupts: their flight crashed on September 22, 2004. It is now November 29, 69 days later. They have contact with the outside world. While they have been away, Ben says, many things have happened. For example, George W. Bush was reelected, and the Bosten Red Sox won the World Series. At this, Jack laughs. “If you wanted me to believe you, you should have picked somebody else other than the Red Sox.” Ben makes it worse by saying that they clinched the ALCS from the Yankees after being behind 3 wins to none. Jack definately does not believe — until Ben turns the TV on. Right there, on the screen, is the final out of the World Series.

“That’s home, Jack, right there, on the other side of that glass. And if you listen to me, if you trust me, if you do what I tell you when the time comes, I’ll take you there. I will take you home.”

Key Points & Observations

  • Locke was a marijuana farmer along with a bunch of other people in a weed farming community sometime after the incident with his father.
  • Locke, Desmond, and Eko survived the hatch incident. The hatch was blown to pieces.
  • A former inhabitant of The Pearl was killed by a polar bear.
  • Locke and Desmond seem to be affected in weird ways by the hatch incident. Desmond could see the future. Locke was mute, talked to the island, and saw Eko talking. Eko and Charlie have not displayed odd behavior yet.

  • The character introductions of Nikki (Kiele Sanchez) and Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro) were horrible. They suddenly popped up. A good character introduction, in my opinion, was Arzt’s introduction back in Season One. Unfortunately, Nikki and Paulo’s were not like that.
  • The polar bears are back. Seriously, writers, I think that the polar bears should be explained so that new watchers aren’t totally weirded out by them. Heck, longtime watchers don’t even know 100% positively what is up with them.
  • There wasn’t much having to do with the hatch explosion. All we saw were Locke and Desmond lying the jungle and a big hole in the ground.
  • The beach camp wasn’t very worked up about the hatch door falling or the white light.
  • I find the supernatural properties of the island interesting & fun, but if the writers dig themselves into a hole too deep, they won’t be able to explain them well. Be careful.

Summary

I. Awake

Opening shot: the eye of Locke. He’s in the jungle, lying down in the weeds. He hears footsteps, and sees Desmond’s head over the top of the weeds, running. Locke stands up. A stick falls from a tree above him. It’s Eko’s stick.

Locke, some time later, walks into the beach camp. Claire and Charlie see him. He walks to a tent (his?) and pulls it down. He grabs the materials and walks off. Charlie follows him to Eko’s Church. Charlie comments that he was gone the whole day, and now he just shows up without saying a word. Locke motions, trying to get Charlie to understand something. For one thing, Locke can’t speak. Charlie nails it: He needs to speak to the island.

LOST.

II. Mute

Locke has a marker and a pad of paper. Charlie is back in the camp. Locke gives the paper to him with a message on it: “I need your help.” In subsequent messages, Locke tells Charlie that he needs Charlie to stand guard in front of Locke’s sweat lodge.

Flashback I

John Locke, hair and all, is in his truck driving down the highway in the rain. Hitchhiker. John stops and picks him up. Locke introduces himself as John, the hitchhiker introduces himself as Eddie. Eddie is a young man in his early twenties who is escaping his old life, looking for work. As they drive along, the rain stops. Suddenly, Locke is pulled over by a police officer. Eddie jokes and asks him if he robbed a bank. John jokingly confirms it. The officer asks Locke for his identification, which he gives. Apparently he had a tail light out. The officer asks Eddie and Locke to step out of the car, and then asks Locke what is in the back of the car. “Guns and groceries,” Locke answers, and tells him that the registration for the guns are in a notebook in the back, also. Locke asks him if they are free to go, and the officer says no, he’s going to arrest Locke for picking up a hitchhiker. Eddie says that John is is uncle. The officer leaves, and Eddie asks John what the heck was up with all the guns.

III. In the Airport With Boone

Locke built a small tent with a small door in the church, with a fire pit inside. He’s making a weird substance in a pot. Charlie asks him if he’s making drugs. John brushes that off and writes by way of the paper not to come in the tent. He goes in, shirt off, and closes the door after him. He sits down and starts the fire. He eats a small but of the substance that he had made, and then poors a small bit of water on the fire and a bit on his head. The tent starts to fill with steam. John vision begins to blur when he suddenly sees someone sitting next to him: Boone. John motions that he is sorry. Boone says, almost sarcastically, “Oh, but I was the sacrifice the island demanded.” John will talk again when he has something to say. Boone is back to help John “bring the family back together”. “Come, I want to show you something.” John notices that he can’t use his legs. Boone says that he’ll have to use the wheelchair, which presently appears on the other end of the tent.

John passes out and wakes up in the Sydney airport, in a wheel chair, with Boone pushing his wheelchair. “Someone in this airport is in trouble, and you are the only one who can save them,” Boone says. Locke sees Charlie, Claire, and Aaron. It’s not them. He sees Sun, Jin, and Sayid in line. Not them. Hurley is in a flight attendant suit at the front of the line. He enters the numbers into the computer terminal in front of him. Not him. Desmond is heading down the escalator, followed by several flight attendants. Not him. Kate and Sawyer are in line for the baggage check, acting nice to each other. Up farther in line is Jack, looking depressed. He is being waved by Ben, who is in a flight attendant suit. There’s nothing John can do for them. First, he must clean up his own mess. Suddenly Locke is alone at the bottom of an empty escalator. Boone is at the top, telling Locke to come up. He gets out of his wheelchair and falls onto the ground and crawls onto the escalator. He reaches the top, and at his feet is blood, and Eko’s stick. “They’ve got him, and you don’t have much time,” Boone says.

John wakes back up in the tent, and walks out (he can use his legs now that the dream is over). Charlie asks him what happened. Is he all right? John pulls out his knife. “I’m going to save Mr. Eko’s life,” he says.

IV. Not Another Polar Bear

Locke and Charlie are walking in the jungle, tracking. John sees a cross necklace in the weeds. “He was dragged this way,” Locke says. “By a polar bear.” But Sawyer killed the polar bear, Charlie says. He killed a polar bear, John corrects. There is blood on the ground. John wants to go on alone, but Charlie won’t leave. John doesn’t stop him, but says that bad things happen to people who hang around him.

Flashback II

Locke drives into a driveway. A small kid opens up a gate, and Locke gives the kid, named Bobby, a bag of candy. They drive up into a wooded area with lots of people milling about next to a building and tent with smoke coming out the top. “What is that?” Eddie asks. It’s a sweat lodge. You get it all hot and steamy, and then you meditate, and figure out what to do with your life — in Eddie’s example, a farmer or a hunter.

It’s dinner time, and the people gather to a long string of picnic tables. John introduces Eddie to Mike and Jan, who welcome him. They notice that Eddie has a Geronimo Jackson shirt on. Locke prays for dinner, and thanks God for his recent change in temperment from angry to at peace. They eat.

V. The Crater

Locke and Charlie are still in the jungle. They run across a large depression — more like a crater — in the ground. At the bottom, they can see the remains of the Swan hatch. John says it looks like it imploded. They walk along, and see a dead animal. John says that it is an active kill, meaning that the polar bear will be back. Suddenly, they hear a roar coming from the side. They see a bit of the polar bear and take off running. They hit a dead end and see a rustling in tall weeds ahead of them. Locke pulls out his knife and throws it expertly into the bushes. A human cry rings out, and a man steps out of the weeds holding a canteen in front of his face with Locke’s knife embedded in it. It’s Hurley. “Dude.”

VI. Hurley is Back

Hurley, Locke, and Charlie are walking in the jungle. Hurley relates his story: They were captured by the Others, and they kept Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Michael and Walt left on the Others’ boat. Henry was there, acting as their leader. What are we going to do? Locke says to do what the Others told him to do: go back to the camp and tell them. Right now, he has to save Eko (because the island told him to, as Charlie points out). Hurley leaves, scared of the polar bears. John and Charlie, after walking, find a tuft of polar bear fur. Charlie says that when he used to get high, he would watch nature shows on TV. Polar bears are supposed to be very smart. Just then they run into the polar bear’s cave.

Flashback III

Eddie and John are walking along the outside of the large storage building. Eddie jokes about a girl whom he thinks likes Locke, and Locke brushes him off. Eddie sees a couple men unloading bags of fertilizer off a truck and bringing them into a greenhouse nearby. Eddie asks John about the greenhouse. John avoids the subject, and tells him that they have orchard duty. Eddie asks him what the big secret is. He’s been there for six weeks and anytime he gets close to the greenhouse, people start to act all weird. John says that things like that take time. Eddie says that he knows about the fertilizer: he wants to be a part of whatever they are trying to blow up (making bombs in the greenhouse). John laughs. He’ll talk to Mike and Jan.

VII. At the Entrance

Locke is getting ready to enter the polar bear cave. He is making a torch. He finishes, and spreads mud all over himself. He pulls hair spray from his back. Charlie makes a funny comment about Locke having no hair, and Locke says that it isn’t for him. He lights the torch, pulls out his knife, and goes in. Charlie stays outside.

VIII. Desmond is Naked

Hurley is walking along in the jungle. Something moves in the weeds. He is worried that it is the polar bear. Nope, just Desmond. Naked. Apparenty, Desmond says, he woke up like that. He ignores Hurley’s other inquiries about what happened, and asks for some clothes. Hurley gives him a long shirt.

IX. Toy Truck?

John is in the cave. He steps on a toy truck on the ground.

Flashback IV

John walks into the greenhouse. He passes rows upon rows of planted marijuana plants. Mike and Jan are in the back, hurriedly packing up a small office. What is happening? Jan says that Locke screwed up big time. Turns out that Eddie is an undercover cop, fresh out of the academy. He’s been there for six weeks gathering evidence (Eddie’s picture and information is displayed on a computer screen nearby). They need to get away. Mike tells John to fix the problem.

X. Eko

John walks into a chamber with a ton of bones on the ground. One skeleton is laying on the ground, still with a shirt on. A t-shirt with none other than a large DHARMA logo in the center of it. The logo is none other than the Pearl logo (nothing in the middle of the octagons). Some of the DHARMA folk obviously fell prey to their own experiments. Locke sees Eko just ahead, laying on the ground. He goes to Eko… And a polar bear roar fills the cave. Locke throws a rock at the polar bear to gain time, and then sprays the hair spray through the torch, creating a makeshift flamethrower. The polar bear gets the full force of the flame in the face. It runs away. Locke picks up the unconscious Eko and brings out of the cave. Charlie and John carry him away.

XI. Failsafe-ing

Hurley & Desmond are walking back to the camp. Desmond is telling Hurley about the hatch incident and the fail-safe key. Hurley asks why Desmond didn’t use the key before, to which Desmond says that he didn’t know what it would do. After the fact, it seems that the electromagnetic anomaly blew up, taking the hatch with it, and somehow they survived. Hurley tells Desmond about the bright light like Desmond would know about it. Desmond tells him that he didn’t know about the light, as he was knocked out from the explosion. Hurley tells him about how Jack, Kate, and Sawyer saw it too, with obvious worry for them in his voice. Desmond reassures him: Locke will find them and bring them back; he said so in his speach. Hurley points out the obvious: What speach? Desmond thinks for a moment, obviously confused. “Forget about it, I’m a bit shook up.”

XII. Too Many Messes

Charlie and Locke, with Eko on their shoulders, are heading towards the camp. Charlie asks John what he saw in the tent. Boone, he answers. Charlie is surprised. John says that Boone told him to clean up his mess, which is what he is doing right now, saving Mr. Eko.

Flashback V

John and Eddie are hunting in the woods. Both have rifles. Eddie brings up the greenhouse, and John points over his shoulder like he sees a deer. Eddie turns around, bringing up his gun, ready to shoot the deer. John aims his rifle at Eddie, who turns around. “Did you know that it would be me in the truck?” John asks. Eddie acts confused as he slowly starts to move his gun. John tells him that it isn’t loaded. Eddie drops the gun and tells John that he did know. They chose him because John had no criminal record, hadn’t been at the compound/community long, and he was “amenable for coersion”. Eddie emphasizes that it is not personal. He starts to back up. He says that John won’t be able shoot him. John says that he’s wrong; he’s a hunter. John is a good man. Eddie turns around and walks away calmly. John keeps the gun aimed at him, but can’t bring himself to shoot Eddie. He walks away in the opposite directions.

XIII. He Speaks… Or Does He?

Locke and Charlie bring Eko to a stream and set him against a tree. While Charlie gets water, Locke begins to apologize to the unconscious Eko about how he should have kept pressing the button. He should have listened. He should have protected Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Now they are captured. Suddenly, Eko’s eyes open and he speaks: you can still protect them. You can save them. You will find them… After all, John’s a hunter. Charlie comes back and sees Locke staring in shock at Eko, who, once again, is obviously unconscious. Locke says that they need to go as he pours some water down into Eko’s mouth.

XIV. The Speach & The Future

Locke and Charlie bring Eko into the camp. Claire and Nikki (a new plane crash survivor introduced as a semi-main character, such as Arzt) see them and run up. They need Jack, Nikki points up. Hurley, who is standing nearby, says that the Others took Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Nikki and Paulo (also a new plane crash survivor) are close to being hysterical, as are everybody else. What about Sun, Sayid, and Jin? They don’t know. Locke stands up and says that he will find Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. He will bring them back. Hurley suddenly realizes something and looks totally weirded out. Charlie says to Hurley: that wasn’t a bad speech. Hurley notices Desmond standing within hearing distance on the beach, skipping rocks. Charlie asks Hurley to get bandages from the beach kitchen. Hurley continues to stare at Desmond.

A close up of Desmond’s face.
